Work Trend Report Highlights Key Insights Amid Surging AI Adoption

The 2024 Work Trend Index, released by Microsoft and LinkedIn, reveals a dramatic increase in the use of generative AI in the global workplace, nearly doubling over the first half of the year.

This surge is reshaping the way people work, lead, and hire, offering critical insights for Nigerian businesses aiming to enhance their AI capabilities.

AI is making a significant impact on Nigeria’s economy, particularly within the fintech sector, where around 29 per cent of companies have adopted generative AI for content creation.

The market for AI in Nigeria is projected to reach $1.05 billion in 2024, with 90 per cent of Nigerian companies expected to adopt AI technologies.

However, despite this growth, challenges remain, particularly in AI readiness, strategy, and skills development.

Ola Williams, Microsoft Nigeria’s Country Manager, notes that many Nigerian businesses struggle to move from experimentation to tangible business impact with AI.

The report emphasizes the need for a holistic approach to AI adoption to drive meaningful business outcomes.

Globally, 75 per cent of knowledge workers now use AI at work, with many bringing their own AI tools, a trend known as “Bring Your Own AI” (BYOAI).

Yet, 60 percent of leaders worry their companies lack a clear AI vision. The report suggests that organizations must channel this momentum into strategic AI use at scale.

AI is also raising the bar for employees, with professionals increasingly skilling up on their own. LinkedIn data shows a 142x increase in members adding AI skills to their profiles.

Nigerian companies, particularly in the technology sector, face a significant skills gap, but ongoing education and training efforts are helping to bridge this divide.

As AI continues influencing the workplace, the rise of “AI power users” highlights the potential for reimagining business processes. These users, who extensively integrate AI into their work, report higher job satisfaction and productivity, supported by leadership that encourages AI adoption.

Williams underscores the importance of upskilling the workforce to unlock AI’s full potential in Nigeria, noting that businesses must empower employees to use AI effectively and responsibly to ensure long-term success.

Microsoft and LinkedIn continue to roll out AI-driven tools and courses to support this transformation, aiming to help both organizations and professionals stay ahead in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
