Why Man Utd Are Already Out of Champions League Even If PSG Lose To Istanbul Basaksehir

Some fans have been confused about United’s elimination already being confirmed despite the PSG vs Istanbul Basaksehir game restarting on Wednesday with a 5.55pm GMT kick-off.

Manchester United won’t be able to get a late reprieve in the Champions League regardless of the Paris Saint-Germain vs Istanbul Basaksehir result.

The clash in Paris will restart at 5.55pm GMT on Wednesday evening in the 14th minute of the match and at 0-0, having been halted on Tuesday due to allegations that the fourth official used a racist term towards Basaksehir assistant coach Pierre Webo.

With former Newcastle and Chelsea forward Demba Ba leading the protestations against the official, both PSG and Basaksehir players joined forces to walk off the pitch in protest.

The match will restart with a completely different team of officials, but after United lost 3-2 at RB Leipzig it will have little bearing on the group.

That is because PSG are already through regardless of what happens despite them being level on points with United, while Basaksehir are out and will exit European football completely.

With tie-breakers in Champions League groups decided first by head-to-head records and then by goal difference, the fact that United’s goal difference is +5 and PSG’s is +3 doesn’t matter unless those head-to-head records are identical.

The French side could lose 10-0 to the Turkish champions in Paris and it will have no bearing on United’s fate.

Effectively the group has swung on the third goal that PSG scored in their 3-1 win over United at Old Trafford last week, as that Neymar strike ensured that the French champions overtook United’s impressive 2-1 win in Paris on Matchday 1.

In terms of the group, the only thing on the line in the restarted match on Wednesday is whether PSG will finish first or second.

Any win ensures that they will finish above RB Leipzig due to their superior head-to-head record against them (2-1 defeat away, 1-0 win at home).
