Following investigations into the dehumanizing treatment of a female citizen as shown in a viral video on Wednesday, 22nd July, 2020, the Nigeria Police Force said it has identified three police officers a civilian accomplice who participated in the unprofessional act.
A statement signed by DCP Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer, on Thursday said; “Two (2) suspects, ASP Tijani Olatunji and Inspr Gboyega Oyeniyi have been arrested for their role in the discreditable conduct and incivility to a member of the public. They are currently being detained at the Lagos State CID detention facility, Panti, Yaba.
“Preliminary investigations show that the policemen who are attached Area ‘A’ Command, Lion Building, Lagos, were on legitimate investigation activities to Ibadan, Oyo State where the incident took place.
“Effort is being intensified to arrest the two other accomplices. Meanwhile, appropriate disciplinary procedure will be initiated as soon as investigations are concluded.”
On Wednesday, a Twitter user — identified as Olayinka Olaonipekun — had, in a thread, shared a video clip of the lady being verbally harassed by an officer.
The officers were said to have carried out a raid at the apartment of an alleged kidnapper in Ibadan, Oyo state capital, wherein they met the lady.
Towobola, who was said to be a lover to the arrested suspect, was nabbed in the process and consequently handcuffed while one of the officers could be seen asking her series of personal questions.
The grilling took a different dimension with questions ranging from “Are you (suspect) a virgin?, “How many people have you slept with?,” and “Why did you dump your first lover to sleep with a criminal?”.
The footage had since generated heated controversies on social media platforms, while many had earlier called on appropriate authorities to investigate the alleged harassment.
