Govt Advises Residents on Freshwater Usage

The Lagos State Government has urged residents to ensure the proper usage of freshwater to ensure its availability and sustainability in the future.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, said this at the celebration of World Water Day, themed ‘Water and Climate Change,’ in Lagos.

Describing the theme of the event as apt, Bello said climate change had significantly affected the change in the water cycle.

Bello, in a statement, noted that due to various factors, such as population growth, industrialisation and climate change, water resources across the world had been under great pressure in terms of quantity and quality.

He said, “The World Water Day is celebrated across the world every year to increase the awareness among people about the importance, need and conservation of water with the focus on universal access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene, in line with the targets of SDG 6 by 2030.

“The growing gap between natural water resources and demand for water necessitates the treatment of wastewater through appropriate technology and thereafter, reuse of wastewater in areas, such as agriculture, irrigation and energy.”
