Engraced Lifestyle Foundation Sets To Empower Okobaba Destitute
Following its SDG 2 (Zero hunger relief project) carried out on February 15th, 2020 which catered for about 2,000 beggars at the Okobaba destitute homes, a non-profit organisation, Engraced Lifestyle Foundation has concluded arrangements to further reduce redundancy in the community and ultimately achieve sustainable measures and most importantly make them become value creators.
In line with its effort in achieving sustainability through SDG 8, the foundation is set to provide decent work and economic growth to the destitute home through access to skill acquisition training like hairstyling, shoe making & soap making to empower them.
The Okobaba Destitute Home popularly known as the beggar’s colony is located in the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos, Nigeria. The home accommodates multiple disabilities such as leprosy, blind, the crippled and beggars of all ages that are lurked at the bus stops, streets and market places.
Speaking on the project, CEO, Engraced Lifestyle Foundation, Grace Oyemade said, “Our engagement with leaders of the home has served as an eye-opener to the way of life in the slum community. The community is not only subject to diseases with limited access to medical facilities, but the level of malnutrition, high child mortality rate and hunger is also on the increase. They have to live by relief items and donations daily. Our intervention will liberate and provide an opportunity to be empowered through the skill acquisition training and ultimately providing tools and capital to start off small scale businesses that will help them become value creators.”
While calling on individuals and corporate organisations to support the project, Oyemade noted, “Being identified as a credible organization with a passion for community development, we would like to request your support or partnership to avail more communities like Okobaba community to grant access to skill acquisition training like Hairstyling, shoe making & Soapmaking to empower the destitute.
The empowerment project, she explained, would provide beneficiaries with preferred vocational skills through training as they would also be given capital and necessary tools.
She noted that beneficiaries would be provided ongoing support with business management skills while the foundation would also carry out therapy sessions for trainees with a goal of achieving a mindset shift and re-orientation.
“Training will last for all weekends in the month of April 2022 by facilitators and volunteers as the exhibition will take place on the 30th, which is the last day.
“A one-year internship program for trainees will be carried with strict monitoring exercise and follow up, as interns will enjoy proximity to established business owner’s location to avert the cost of transportation,” Oyemade submitted.
