California, Lagos Move to Unlock New Trade, Investment Opportunities

Lagos State is set to deepen its economic engagement with California and attract fresh capital, technology and business partnerships as global investors, entrepreneurs and diaspora business leaders converge for the California–Lagos Business & Investment Summit on September 17 and 18.

The summit, themed “Building the California–Nigeria Business Bridge,” is expected to feature the signing of a trade pact between the State of California and Lagos State, marking a significant step towards expanding trade and investment opportunities between the two economic powerhouses.

The agreement is expected to be led by the governors of both jurisdictions and will focus attention on creating stronger channels for investment, technology transfer, market access and private-sector collaboration.

Organised by Afretrade Inc. in partnership with the US Diaspora United Chamber of Commerce, NIED Group and the Office of Diaspora Affairs of Lagos State, the summit is designed to connect California’s deep pool of capital, technology and expertise with opportunities emerging from Lagos and the wider African market.

At the centre of the engagement is Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s commercial capital and one of Africa’s most important business gateways.

With a large and youthful consumer market, a strong financial-services ecosystem, a growing technology and fintech sector, a vibrant creative economy and major opportunities in infrastructure, logistics, real estate and manufacturing, Lagos offers international investors access to one of Africa’s largest and most dynamic markets.

California, with an economy of more than $4 trillion, brings complementary strengths in technology, venture capital, entertainment, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and innovation.

The summit will therefore focus on areas where both economies can build commercially viable partnerships, including technology and fintech, trade and logistics, transportation infrastructure, creative industries, agriculture and agro-processing, renewable energy, real estate and urban development, and SME financing.

Chief Executive Officer of Afretrade, Lekan Salaam, said the objective was to move the relationship beyond diplomacy and into tangible economic opportunities.

“Africa’s economy will only thrive through love, unity of purpose and collaboration without subordination,” Salaam said.

He added that the summit would provide entrepreneurs, investors and diaspora leaders with an opportunity to turn goodwill into enterprise and long-term business partnerships.

The summit will also recognise earlier efforts to strengthen California–Nigeria relations, including initiatives involving the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA), led by California State Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin, the Office of Mark Henney and the Bay Area Council.

The organisers said the private sector was now positioned to build on that institutional foundation by driving commercial activity between the two markets.

The September 17–18 summit will feature keynote addresses, high-level investment discussions, panel sessions, capital-raising engagements and business matchmaking.

An official celebration is scheduled to take place at the historic Stanford Mansion, while a Gala and Award Night will be held at the Hyatt Regency Sacramento.

The programme will continue in San Francisco on Friday, with a high-level diplomatic and business networking reception involving representatives of Lagos State and members of the Bay Area business community.

Expected participants include CEOs, investors, entrepreneurs, SME owners, Nigerian professionals and business owners in the United States, African diaspora business leaders, policymakers, trade officials and development stakeholders.

For Lagos, the summit presents an opportunity to position the state more aggressively on the global investment map by leveraging its California connection to attract capital, technology, expertise and new markets, while creating new pathways for Lagos-based businesses to expand internationally.
