BREAKING: Again, Atiku Dumps PDP, Says Decision ‘Heartbreaking’
… submits resignation letter to party’s ward chairman
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Atiku said his resignation from the PDP, which takes immediate effect, followed the “trajectory” the party has taken.
Atiku is currently one of the key promoters of the opposition coalition on the platform of the African Democratic Congress.
The former presidential flagbearer’s resignation letter was dated July 14, 2025 and addressed to the PDP Chairman of his Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
He noted that the PDP had deviated from its founding principles.
Atiku’s resignation letter reads, “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party.
“Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.
“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.
“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
In recent months, he has been rallying opposition leaders under a new coalition, which has now adopted the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling APC in 2027.
The news that former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has dumped PDP did not come to many as a surprise.
In 2014, Atiku had dumped the PDP for APC in the buildup of the 2015 elections. In 2017, the former Vice President returned to the PDP.
While it has been typical of him to move from one political party to another whenever he comes to the realisation that the party he is leaving will not give him the opportunity to realise his long time ambition of becoming the president of the country, the then Minister of Information Labaran Maku under the PDP-led government, described him, along with others, as a political nomad who keep migrating from one place to another.
When his former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo, frustrated his ambition to succeed him as president, Atiku moved to the defunct Action Congress (AC), the main opposition party at the time, which he helped to set up and won its presidential ticket for the 2007 presidential race. He eventually lost.
In 2009, he returned to the PDP, the party he co-founded with others in 1998.
