{"id":1396,"date":"2021-07-09T14:03:31","date_gmt":"2021-07-09T13:03:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mydailybells.com.ng\/businessbells\/?p=1396"},"modified":"2021-07-09T14:25:42","modified_gmt":"2021-07-09T13:25:42","slug":"nigeria-must-create-environment-to-encourage-export-attract-forex-muda-yusuf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mydailybells.com.ng\/businessbells\/nigeria-must-create-environment-to-encourage-export-attract-forex-muda-yusuf\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria Must Create Environment To Encourage Export, Attract Forex \u2013 Muda Yusuf"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"color-pad\">\n<div class=\"entry-content read-details color-tp-pad no-color-pad\">\n<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":12n\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":12f\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div class=\"gmail_quote\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<h4 dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">The immediate past Director General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr. Muda Yusuf has called on the Nigerian authorities to create an enabling environment that will encourage export business and attract foreign exchange (forex).<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nigerian economy, according\u00a0 to him, has the capacity to attract a lot of foreign exchange because of its size, stressing that there are potentials and\u00a0 opportunities that are still hidden.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the monthly forum of the Finance Correspondents Association (FICAN) on Thursday, Yusuf stated that foreign exchange earning is all about creating the environment for more inflows to come in the form of diaspora remittances, foreign direct investment inflows, foreign portfolio investment,\u00a0\u00a0 export proceeds among others.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the forum is : \u201cPost COVID-19 Economy in H1:2021 and Outlook For Financial Services Sector.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the former DG observed that the exporters are passing through a lot of difficulties, adding that the way to attract foreign exchange is to export but \u201d if you go to the ports and see what exporters are going through, you feel sorry for them and the Nigerian economy in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to Yusuf, \u201cWe say we don\u2019t have foreign exchange but the way to attract foreign exchange is to export. However, exporting is almost a nightmare in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor instance, the process for export cannot begin until an exporter has loaded the truck and paid the truck owner.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter paying the truck owner, he would go through about two weeks of inspection and documentation. After which he will also face the traffic gridlock and\u00a0 before they could finish the inspection and documentation some of the products must have gone bad especially the ones that are perishable,\u201d he emphasized.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He also said that the policy of exchanging export proceeds at the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange (NAFEX) rate is not fair to the exporters because of the gap between the official and unofficial exchange rate windows.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This, he revealed, is one of the reasons why some of the exporters hide their export proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExporters should have free access to their export proceeds and be incentivised, just like the Nigerian diaspora were\u00a0 encouraged with the Central Bank of Nigeria\u2019s naira 4 dollar exchange rate policy for remittances.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yusuf further stated that looking back in to the last six months, the monetary policy makers retained policy parameters as\u00a0 the committee\u00a0 tried\u00a0 to\u00a0 maintain\u00a0 a\u00a0 balance\u00a0 between boosting growth recovery and curbing the monetary component of inflationary pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The CBN, according to him, sustained its developmental finance intervention\u00a0 in\u00a0 the\u00a0 first\u00a0 half\u00a0 as\u00a0 part\u00a0 of\u00a0 efforts\u00a0 in\u00a0 stimulating\u00a0 local production.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, \u201cThe bank employed administrative measures including Open Market Operation (OMO) auctions, Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR)\/ Cash Reserve Requirement (CRR) debit and special bill auctions to control excess liquidity in the banking system as a way of tackling the monetary inflationary drivers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe\u00a0 banking\u00a0 industry\u00a0 demonstrated\u00a0 resilience\u00a0 amid\u00a0 disruptions associated with the pandemic, attributable to the policy intervention of the CBN,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Going by key ratios, Yusu added that\u00a0 the banking industry is financially stable and sound with industry capital adequacy and liquidity ratios above\u00a0 regulatory\u00a0 threshold\u00a0 while\u00a0 non-performing\u00a0 loan\u00a0 ratios\u00a0 is slightly above the five percent prudential
