    FRSC Begins ‘Operation Show Your Driver’s License, Vehicle Papers’ in Lagos

     

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Lagos State will on Monday commence ‘Operation Show Your Driver’s License and Vehicle License’.

     

    In a statement on Sunday, the Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide condemned how owners of vehicles, tricycle and bike riders ply the road without permit.

     

    Ogungbemide lamented that a high number of permanent driver’s licenses were yet to be picked from FRSC stations.

     

    The first phase of the operation showed that a number of motorists drive without valid documentation while some don’t have.

     

    “With the recent increase in vehicular movements as a result of the ember months, there is the need for all drivers to be handy with their driver’s licenses.

     

    “The exercise will ensure all drivers have valid vehicle papers”, Ogungbemide added. The operation starts Monday, October 4 and will end October 10, 2021.

     

    The FRSC hinted that defaulters will have their vehicles impounded until they provide genuine documents.

     

    The commander said the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR) 2021, Regulation 67(1) states that any person driving a vehicle on any public road must be in possession of an original driver’s license.

    Motorists Driving With Earphones Risk Six Months In Jail –FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, says it is illegal to receive or make telephone calls while driving, regardless of any wireless gadget used for such communication.

     

    The FRSC also said drivers who make or receive calls behind the wheels with AirPods, EarPods or any form wired or wireless earphones and handsfree mode risk six months in jail.

     

    FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, said driving requires total concentration and road users should not take any risk on their lives.

     

    He said it is illegal to make calls or receive same while driving, according to the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012.

     

    Kazeem said, “It is illegal. Driving entails 100 per cent concentration so you cannot be distracted. It is there in the regulation.

     

     “It is clear from the provisions of Reg 166 (1) that it is illegal to make phone call using EarPods earphone or whatever means.

     

    “It is also clear that phone call is not restricted to telephone conversation between two or more people.

     

    “Anything that will distract you while driving must be avoided. When we do public enlightenment, we even discourage drivers talking to passengers which could cause distraction.

     

    “The law may not make it an offence but at the same time, it can distract you, even changing your cassette (while driving) can distract you and result to accident.”

    Kabba-Omuo Ekiti Highway Traffic: FRSC Notifies Motorists Of Alternative Routes

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC has issued an alternative route for motorists travelling to and from the South-West through the Kabba-Omuo Ekiti Highway.

     

    This is as a result of a failed section of the road at Ikoyi under Iyara Local Government Area of Kogi State which has led to a poor flow of traffic.

     

    Motorists are advised to use Kabba/Asaya/Ogidi/Ikare as alternative route to or from South-West.

     

    Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem, disclosed this in a statement made available to The Business Bells.

     

    The statement read, “Members of the motoring public and general commuters travelling from or to Southwest, through Kabba- Omuo Ekiti Federal Highway are hereby notified of a failed section of the road at Ikoyi under Iyara local government area of Kogi State.

     

    “This development has led to lack of free flow of traffic at the said portion of the road.

     

    “In view of the foregoing, motorists, travellers, and the general public are hereby advised to use Kabba/Asaya/Ogidi/Ikare as alternative route to or from South-West. The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing is already activating appropriate action to ameliorate the situation.

    Alternative Routes

    “The Federal Road Safety Corps solicits maximum cooperation of the motoring public on this development. The Corps will also continue to update the public periodically on further developments.

     

    “Meanwhile, operatives of FRSC are on ground controlling traffic.”

    ‘We’re Not A Revenue Generating Agency,’ FRSC Fumes as FG Hikes Vehicle Number Plate, Driving Licence Rates By 50%

     

    The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of new rates for vehicle number plates and driving licence across the country.

     

    According to the Joint Tax Board, Nigerians will now pay N18,750 for standard private and commercial number plates against the old rate of N12,500.

     

    Fancy number plate which was N80,000 is now N200,000; motorcycle number plate is N5,000 from N3,000 while articulated number plates (three plates) attract N30,000 from N20,000. For these rates, the minimum increase is 50 per cent.

     

    Out of series number plate has also been revised to N50,000 from N40,000 while government fancy number plate is N20,000 against the former N15,000 rate.

     

    Driving licence (three years) was raised to N10,000 from N6,000, excluding bank charges; licence for five years is N15,000 from N10,000 while motorcycle/tricycle driving licence (three years) goes for N5,000 from N3,000 while the one for five years attracts N8,000 from N5,000.

     

    The decision was taken at the 147th meeting of the JTB, which held in Kaduna on March 25.

     

    A letter by the JTB titled ‘Implementation of the revised rates for vehicles number plates and driver’s licence in Nigeria’, dated July 30, 2021 and signed by the board secretary, Obomeghfe Nana-Aisha, directed various federal and state agencies to commence the implementation of the rates.

     

    Members of the JTB established by section 86 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act cap. P8 LFN 2004, include the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service as the chairman of the board; one member from each state and representatives of the Federal Road Safety Commission; Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission; Federal Capital Territory Administration; Federal Ministry of Finance; and Federal Inland Revenue Service.

     

    The letter read, “You may wish to recall that at the 147th meeting of the Joint Tax Board held in Kaduna, Kaduna State on March 25, 2021, the board approved revised rates for the sale of vehicle number plates and driving licence in line with the recommendations of Appraisal and Technical Committee of the JTB.

     

    “In the light of the foregoing, we wish to inform you that the Chairman, JTB, has approved Thursday, August 1, 2021, as the commencement date for the implementation of the new rates.”

     

    Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that the agency remained a safety corps and not a revenue generating agency.

     

    Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, stated this while dismissing a report circulating on social media that the agency was behind the hike.

     

    He also described as incorrect the report that the standard number plate was N55, 000.

     

    Kazeem said that it had become necessary for the Corps to serve this as a warning to those circulating the fake news on the  prices of number plates and driver’s license.

     

    The Business Bells gathered that there had been a report circulating that FRSC had increased the price of number plates and driver’s license tagging it as a revenue generating agency.

     

    The reports stated that registration of New Blue Plate is now 55, 000, registration of New Red Plate 65,000, Registration of New Articulated Plate 100,000.

     

    Change of Ownership with New BLUE Plate Number 70,000, change of Ownership with New RED Plate Number 80, 000, Change of Ownership with New Articulated Plate Number 115,000.

     

    Transfer of existing Plate Number from One Vehicle to Another 35,000. Replacement of Loss Plate Number 36,000.

     

    Fresh issuance of Drivers license 38,000 for five years, 33,000 three years, Renewal 22, 500 for five years and 18,000 for three years.

    Vehicle Number Plate

    Kazeem said that the noble mandate of the FRSC was to make the nation’s highway safe for motorists and other road users across the country.

     

    According to him, Federal Road Safety Commission was not set up as a revenue generation agency but to ensure the protection of lives and property on the road.

     

    He said that the news circulating round that FRSC had increased the prices of number plates and driver’s license was not true.

     

    He said “The Price increase is from Joint Tax Board (JTB) and not from FRSC. However, the approved price for articulated vehicle number plate is 30,000.

     

    “Motor vehicle driver’s license price for three year is 10,000 while 15,000 is for five years. Standard private and commercial vehicle number place is 18,750 respectively.

     

    “Implementation of the revised rates for vehicles number plates and driver’s license in Nigeria commences on Aug. 1 according to Joint Task Board, “ he said.

     

    Kazeem solicited the support and cooperation of Journalists especially in publicising the activities of the corps saying that the media needed to verify before reporting.

     

    He urged members of the public to note that only the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has the statutory powers to review the prices of the items in question adding that it was the Board that approved the price reviewed.

     

    He further appealed to the motoring public to continue to ensure their vehicles were properly registered as it enhances the security of the vehicles.

     

    Reports shows that the last review on the prices of number plates and driver’s license was done in 2011.

    The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Command, has arrested 15,000 offenders for various traffic offences in the last three months.

     

    The sector commander, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide made this known at the 6th Training and Workshop of the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in Lagos.

     

    The FRSC boss speaking on the sidelines of the presentation said, “We arrested 15,000 offenders in the last three months, you should appreciate the fact that we have succeeded in arresting 15,000 crashes on our roads because the implication is that if we didn’t arrest these people, all the crashes we have been having, the causative reasons behind the crashes are what we have arrested before the real crashes.

     

    This is the angle we should appreciate it from. And that’s why we are so passionate about this. We are at the receiving end and we know where the problem lies and we should be able to tackle it from there.”

     

    He added, “Any time I have reasons to travel and I see a tanker carrying fuel beside me, I get agitated. I rather prefer to stay behind the tanker than to be by its side. The same thing goes for trucks carrying containers. 

     

    “At the beginning of the year, that was the first quarter, we arrested more than 800 trucks carrying containers along Lagos-Ibadan corridor. 

     

    “When say a container that is moved from the port to other part of the country must be latched and locked, they find the way out, they use a better truck to get the container out of the port and when they get outside the port, they transload to another vehicle that does not meet the minimal safety standards and those are the ones that you see crashing all over the place.”

    All is now set for this year’s edition of the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) Training/Capacity Building programme on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the training hall of Golden Tulip Hotel, along the Murtala Muhammed International Airport road, Lagos. 

     

    With the current global automotive industry racing towards electric and gas as an alternative to petrol in vehicular movement, the  Director-General of the National Automotive Design & Development Council (NADDC), Jelani Aliyu (MFR), will declare open this year’s training/capacity programme with the theme “Migration to Electric Vehicles and Gas-powered Vehicles; Opportunities & Challenges for Nigeria”.

     

    Also expected at training and capacity building programme as guest of honour is Boboye Oyeyemi (MFR), Corp Marshal, Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC).

     

    Stakeholders supporting this crucial event holding on Thursday this week are the National Automotive Design & Development Council, Toyota Nigeria Limited, Coscharis Motors, Weststar, CFAO Motors, Autochek Africa, OMAA, Jet Systems, Kojo Motors (Yutong), and the Federal Roads Safety Corps, (FRSC).

     

    According to the event organisers, the one-day training programme is expected to educate Nigerians on what the global shift to electric and gas as an alternative to petrol is all about and the opportunities and challenges of such in the country.

     

    After the declaration of the programme open and presentations by the NADDC DG, who has been on the driver’s seat of Nigeria’s new thinking towards the use of electric and gas to move vehicles and other automotives as a cheap alternative to fossil fuel, local auto assemblers of electric vehicles and gas-powered vehicles are expected to give  technical presentations of their operations with a look at the opportunities and challenges of producing such vehicles in the country.

     

    Presentations will be made from Stallion Motors, assemblers of the Hyundai Kona electric vehicle in Lagos, OMAA Global, assemblers of the OMAA gas-powered range of buses at Igbo-Ukwu in Anambra state and Jet Systems Limited, assemblers of the JetMover range buses that runs on electric.

     

    It would be recalled that Ford Motors South Africa (FMCSA) in collaboration with Coscharis Motors; its local franchisee were the lead sponsors of the first and second editions held in 2016 and 2017, while Nissan Motors South Africa (NMSA) followed.

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos Sector Command has concluded arrangements to carry out free safety checks on vehicles within the state.

     

    The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide said all commands within the state will commence the 4-days free exercise from March 18 to assist motorists in detecting faults in their vehicles.

     

    Ogungbemide said that the exercise was an initiative of the Corps and a checklist ticket will be issued at the end for follow-up and to encourage the drivers fix any defect discovered in the process.

     

    “The step is necessary to forestall incessant breakdown of vehicles on the road and ensure free flow of traffic especially with the various ongoing rehabilitation/repair in the State.

     

    “The exercise will start from Thursday 18th to Sunday 21st March, 2021 simultaneously on all FRSC formations across Lagos.

     

    “Please be informed that any detected fault does not attract sanction within this period, rather request for such fault to be rectified. This could be seen as Quarterly Corporate Social Responsibility of the Corps to the motoring public.

     

    You are implored to cooperate with the operatives please,” Ogungbemide said.

     

    The FRSC boss advised motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations while also always ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy.

     

    He said that the command would not condone any act of traffic violations in the state.

     

    He further stated that the operation will be carried out by operatives including Special Marshals throughout the duration of the exercise.

    The Federal Road Safety Commission. (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command on Sunday said it has observed with dismay the rampant use of phone by motorists while driving on the road.

     

    The Sector Commander of FRSC, CC Olusegun Ogungbemide in a statement signed by Lagos Sector Command, Public Education Officer, Route Commander Olabisi Sonusi, said the corps had noticed a rising disregard of traffic and safety regulations which forbid use of phone behind wheels.

     

    According to Ogungbemide, traffic laws are for the safety of all road users and efforts should be made be all motorists to only do those things that can make them stay alive.

     

    Ogungbemide said: “We have noticed rising rate of infractions in phoning or use of phone while driving, non-use of seatbelt, rickety vehicles that are not road worthy, lane shunting and general irresponsible driving culture.

     

    According to the National Road Traffic Regulations 2012 section 166 (1) on Use of Communication devices while driving states that- “No driver of a vehicle shall whilst the vehicle is in motion receive or make a telephone call in any form”.

     

    It also states that “An instructor shall not make or receive telephone call in any form while supervising a learner undertaking driving lessons”

     

    The Regulations further states that a telephone call shall include:

    * Sending or receiving oral or written messages.

    * Sending or receiving facsimile documents.

    * Sending or receiving still or moving images.

    * Accessing, surfing or browsing the internet”

     

    The above traffic regulations are for our good.  We have lost so many drivers and other innocent people due to distraction the use of phone caused them while on the road”

     

    “Peace loving, responsible Lagosians and road users are also passing through a lot of pains due to the actions of these few who will not obey simple regulations to keep themselves alive.

     

    “The Command cannot watch and allow these illegality to strive in a descent environment like ours, especially as we enter the peak period of the year.

     

    “All Lagos State Commands of the Corps have been given the mandate to nip these recklessness in the bud by getting all forms of road misconduct apprehended.”
