The Abusites reports that Professor Aminu who was a one-time Students’ Union Government President of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria reportedly embarked on a road trip from London to Kano many years ago.
He was a former SUG President of Ahmadu Bello University, ABU.
The Kano indigene, in an interview with Daily Trust in 2019 shared how he embarked on the trip which took him 24 days with a Peugeot 504.

The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of new rates for vehicle number plates and driving licence across the country.
According to the Joint Tax Board, Nigerians will now pay N18,750 for standard private and commercial number plates against the old rate of N12,500.
Fancy number plate which was N80,000 is now N200,000; motorcycle number plate is N5,000 from N3,000 while articulated number plates (three plates) attract N30,000 from N20,000. For these rates, the minimum increase is 50 per cent.
Out of series number plate has also been revised to N50,000 from N40,000 while government fancy number plate is N20,000 against the former N15,000 rate.
Driving licence (three years) was raised to N10,000 from N6,000, excluding bank charges; licence for five years is N15,000 from N10,000 while motorcycle/tricycle driving licence (three years) goes for N5,000 from N3,000 while the one for five years attracts N8,000 from N5,000.
The decision was taken at the 147th meeting of the JTB, which held in Kaduna on March 25.
A letter by the JTB titled ‘Implementation of the revised rates for vehicles number plates and driver’s licence in Nigeria’, dated July 30, 2021 and signed by the board secretary, Obomeghfe Nana-Aisha, directed various federal and state agencies to commence the implementation of the rates.
Members of the JTB established by section 86 (1) of the Personal Income Tax Act cap. P8 LFN 2004, include the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service as the chairman of the board; one member from each state and representatives of the Federal Road Safety Commission; Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission; Federal Capital Territory Administration; Federal Ministry of Finance; and Federal Inland Revenue Service.
The letter read, “You may wish to recall that at the 147th meeting of the Joint Tax Board held in Kaduna, Kaduna State on March 25, 2021, the board approved revised rates for the sale of vehicle number plates and driving licence in line with the recommendations of Appraisal and Technical Committee of the JTB.
“In the light of the foregoing, we wish to inform you that the Chairman, JTB, has approved Thursday, August 1, 2021, as the commencement date for the implementation of the new rates.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said that the agency remained a safety corps and not a revenue generating agency.
Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, stated this while dismissing a report circulating on social media that the agency was behind the hike.
He also described as incorrect the report that the standard number plate was N55, 000.
Kazeem said that it had become necessary for the Corps to serve this as a warning to those circulating the fake news on the prices of number plates and driver’s license.
The Business Bells gathered that there had been a report circulating that FRSC had increased the price of number plates and driver’s license tagging it as a revenue generating agency.
The reports stated that registration of New Blue Plate is now 55, 000, registration of New Red Plate 65,000, Registration of New Articulated Plate 100,000.
Change of Ownership with New BLUE Plate Number 70,000, change of Ownership with New RED Plate Number 80, 000, Change of Ownership with New Articulated Plate Number 115,000.
Transfer of existing Plate Number from One Vehicle to Another 35,000. Replacement of Loss Plate Number 36,000.
Fresh issuance of Drivers license 38,000 for five years, 33,000 three years, Renewal 22, 500 for five years and 18,000 for three years.
Kazeem said that the noble mandate of the FRSC was to make the nation’s highway safe for motorists and other road users across the country.
According to him, Federal Road Safety Commission was not set up as a revenue generation agency but to ensure the protection of lives and property on the road.
He said that the news circulating round that FRSC had increased the prices of number plates and driver’s license was not true.
He said “The Price increase is from Joint Tax Board (JTB) and not from FRSC. However, the approved price for articulated vehicle number plate is 30,000.
“Motor vehicle driver’s license price for three year is 10,000 while 15,000 is for five years. Standard private and commercial vehicle number place is 18,750 respectively.
“Implementation of the revised rates for vehicles number plates and driver’s license in Nigeria commences on Aug. 1 according to Joint Task Board, “ he said.
Kazeem solicited the support and cooperation of Journalists especially in publicising the activities of the corps saying that the media needed to verify before reporting.
He urged members of the public to note that only the Joint Tax Board (JTB) has the statutory powers to review the prices of the items in question adding that it was the Board that approved the price reviewed.
He further appealed to the motoring public to continue to ensure their vehicles were properly registered as it enhances the security of the vehicles.
Reports shows that the last review on the prices of number plates and driver’s license was done in 2011.
The chief executive officer of OMAA, Chinedu Oguegbu, says time has come for Nigerians to start using natural gas-powered vehicles.
Oguegbu stated this at the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association’s (NAJA) Annual training and capacity building workshop held in Lagos recently during his technical presentation of the opportunities arising from the use of natural gas vehicles.
The theme of this year’s event was “Migration to Electric Vehicles and Gas-powered Vehicles; Opportunities and Challenges for Nigeria”.
Apart from the lead sponsor; the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), other sponsors of this year’s training workshop are Toyota Nigeria Limited, Weststar Associates Limited, franchisees of the Mercedes brand, Jet Systems Limited; assemblers of Jet brands of electric vehicles for passenger and commercial uses and Autochek Africa; online automotive marketing and financing option providers.

As one of the training facilitators, Oguegbu said that the increasing importance of natural gas in the world which is expected to form 26% of the energy mix by 2040 cannot be under-estimated.
According to the boss of OMAA bus manufacturer, “Government policies and technological advancements have led to focus on increasing the output of electric vehicles (EVs) and natural gas vehicles (NGVs). Transportation currently accounts for 15% of Carbon Emissions and vehicles represent a major part of this figure”.
He added “With Nigeria committing to the Paris Agreement to reduce the rate of climate change globally, there is an increased push by the government to promote more environmentally friendly vehicles: EVs, NGVs and Hydrogen.
The advantages of using natural gas include up to 60 percent savings in the cost of fuel relative to other options like diesel and petrol, and up to 90 percent reduction in knocks and carbon emission for a healthier, cleaner and more environmentally friendly fuel alternative.
Another opportunity lies in the development of export businesses with other African markets, thanks to the implementation of AfCFTA.
According to Oguegbu, mass education of the public as well as consistent government policy is also required in order to promote investments in natural gas vehicle assembly and production in Nigeria.

The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Command, has arrested 15,000 offenders for various traffic offences in the last three months.
The sector commander, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide made this known at the 6th Training and Workshop of the Nigeria Auto Journalists Association (NAJA) in Lagos.
The FRSC boss speaking on the sidelines of the presentation said, “We arrested 15,000 offenders in the last three months, you should appreciate the fact that we have succeeded in arresting 15,000 crashes on our roads because the implication is that if we didn’t arrest these people, all the crashes we have been having, the causative reasons behind the crashes are what we have arrested before the real crashes.
This is the angle we should appreciate it from. And that’s why we are so passionate about this. We are at the receiving end and we know where the problem lies and we should be able to tackle it from there.”
He added, “Any time I have reasons to travel and I see a tanker carrying fuel beside me, I get agitated. I rather prefer to stay behind the tanker than to be by its side. The same thing goes for trucks carrying containers.
“At the beginning of the year, that was the first quarter, we arrested more than 800 trucks carrying containers along Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
“When say a container that is moved from the port to other part of the country must be latched and locked, they find the way out, they use a better truck to get the container out of the port and when they get outside the port, they transload to another vehicle that does not meet the minimal safety standards and those are the ones that you see crashing all over the place.”

With the current global automotive industry racing towards electric and gas as an alternative to petrol in vehicular movement, the Director-General of the National Automotive Design & Development Council (NADDC), Jelani Aliyu (MFR), will declare open this year’s training/capacity programme with the theme “Migration to Electric Vehicles and Gas-powered Vehicles; Opportunities & Challenges for Nigeria”.
Also expected at training and capacity building programme as guest of honour is Boboye Oyeyemi (MFR), Corp Marshal, Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC).
Stakeholders supporting this crucial event holding on Thursday this week are the National Automotive Design & Development Council, Toyota Nigeria Limited, Coscharis Motors, Weststar, CFAO Motors, Autochek Africa, OMAA, Jet Systems, Kojo Motors (Yutong), and the Federal Roads Safety Corps, (FRSC).
According to the event organisers, the one-day training programme is expected to educate Nigerians on what the global shift to electric and gas as an alternative to petrol is all about and the opportunities and challenges of such in the country.
After the declaration of the programme open and presentations by the NADDC DG, who has been on the driver’s seat of Nigeria’s new thinking towards the use of electric and gas to move vehicles and other automotives as a cheap alternative to fossil fuel, local auto assemblers of electric vehicles and gas-powered vehicles are expected to give technical presentations of their operations with a look at the opportunities and challenges of producing such vehicles in the country.
Presentations will be made from Stallion Motors, assemblers of the Hyundai Kona electric vehicle in Lagos, OMAA Global, assemblers of the OMAA gas-powered range of buses at Igbo-Ukwu in Anambra state and Jet Systems Limited, assemblers of the JetMover range buses that runs on electric.
It would be recalled that Ford Motors South Africa (FMCSA) in collaboration with Coscharis Motors; its local franchisee were the lead sponsors of the first and second editions held in 2016 and 2017, while Nissan Motors South Africa (NMSA) followed.
Stakeholders in the nation’s automotive industry are pessimistic of the future of auto fairs in the Nigeria.
Their fears are being ignited following a very low turnout recorded during the just concluded Lagos Motor Fair, which in the past 10 years has remained one of the major auto fairs in the country.
Strong indications to the future apathy from stakeholders emerged few weeks ago during the 15th edition of the Lagos International Motor Fair organised by BKG Exhibitions Limited which recorded an all time low turnout of auto dealers and other stakeholders in the nation’s automotive industry. The previous edition recorded the same low turn out.
Apart from vehicle dealers, regular spare parts exhibitors from overseas and other dealers in auto and allied products and services were absent due mainly to Covid-19
The low turnout, according to investigation has to do with the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic worsened by the poor economic situation which has not only affected car dealerships across the country, but has drastically reduced the purchasing power of car users.
BKG’s Lagos Motor Fair
Unlike other editions where over 50 vehicles would be on display by different Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and dealers, the fair witnessed abysmal number of cars and SUVs on display from Mikano Motors, Kia, OMAA, Jet Systems and Coscharis Motors.
This year, other big names that stayed away from what could be described as annual ritual are Toyota Nigeria Limited, Massilia Motors, distributors of Mitsubishi Motors; CFAO/Suzuki, Stallion Motors, dealers of over seven brands; and Westar Limited, dealers of Mercedes among others.
In his comment, general manager, marketing and corporate communication, Coscharis Group, Babarinde Abiona, said the event was not a jamboree but an opportunity to showcase what is new in the sector.
He appealed to the government to create an enabling environment and policy that supports the business that makes the automotive industry a viable economy.
He said with the entry of more players in the industry it shows there is a win-win solution for everyone.
Alluding to the poor turnout at the fair, managing director, BKG Exhibitions Limited, Ifeanyi Agwu, said it is indeed a seriously challenging time in the automotive industry in Nigeria.
Agwu said it is a season that has thrown up more challenges than ever before. A lot of companies have closed shop while a large number are merely existing and direly in need of life supports. This, he said, can be confirmed by the number of exhibitors in this year’s edition.
He added “Ordinarily it is the delight and wish of any serious player in the industry to showcase amongst others but here we are witnessing the opposite.
“All the relevant stakeholders must join hands and release the synergy that will see the sector regain the traction it has gained with the introduction of the NAIDP. This will help to fast track the development of the sector.
For Toyota, their absence in the fair has to do with cutting of expenses which are usually associated with such fairs.
A source at the Toyota Nigeria Limited (TNL) attributed its non-appearance at motor fair to the short notice from the organisers and finance issue.
“Everyone is cutting down on cost and eliminating expenses that have no direct bearing on sales”, the source hinted.
In his views, former Director of Policy and Planning of the NADDC, Mamudu Lukman said, “The industry is now in a state of suspended animation.”
He said the absence of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan (NAIDP) is virtually killing the industry.
“We are hopeful that the minister of industry and finance will soon realise that they were wrongly advised and send a revised NAIDP to FEC for consideration. I understand it’s ready but I don’t know what they are keeping it.
“Section 38 of the 2020 Finance act makes it practically unattractive to invest in local value addition like basic assembly. If you can import a fully built pickup at 10%, why will you import the same vehicle in SKD form? It doesn’t make sense. So everyone is now an importer. It would have attracted more participation if tagged special auction for new and used vehicles.
“Workers already trained by the industry are gradually dispersing as the companies cant continue to retain them.
“We just lost Toyota to Ghana. They approached us first. I know. I led the investment delegation to meet with Toyota Tsumitomo in Japan and the company was quite receptive. The only key demand was that Nigeria should legislate the NAIDP, but the president was advised no to sign it. Those who so advised know themselves.”
Also speaking on the motor fair, a senior lecturer at the mass communications department, Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State, Dr Oscar Odiboh said that the low turnout is clearly a backlash from the economic situation, together with the impact of the covid-19 pandemic.
According to Odiboh, due to economic downturn, people have not been able to raise enough money to buy new cars, adding that even tokunbo vehicles were equally affected.
Odiboh, who is also an automotive and communications consultant, said the only people who were able to participate in the motor show were ardent visitors as very few people are buying cars.
“The economic situation has a role to play in it. In 2009/2010, it affected the auto show. The same in 2011- 2015. The show was affected these previous years and attendance was based on the factors I mentioned above”. Dr Odiboh said.
In his views, the marketing manager, Kia Motors, Nigeria, Olawale Jimoh confirmed that Kia Motors attended the event and that it was okay.
Olawale stated that the event was okay and that it afforded them the opportunity to display their new models.

Olawale hinted that the fair was the first major event that was able to bring auto assemblers together.
Attributing the low turnout to covid-19 pandemic and reduction in purchasing power of the people, Olawale said “the low turnout is due to Covid-19. Again, part of the cause also is the continued reduction in the purchasing power of the people. There has been continued reduction of the purchasing power of the people because the economy has been unstable, which has affected the auto sector”.
Speaking further, Olawale stated that one good thing about the motor fair was that it gave them the opportunity to interact with the Director General of National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr Jelani Aliyu who was on ground during the opening ceremony.
“The opening ceremony of the auto fair gave us an opportunity to have first hand experience to see the DG, NADDC. At the show, the DG made some good promises which has to do with government support for the auto sector. If the promises came to fruition, it will assist to boost the industry once again”, Olawale said.
The Federal Government on Thursday said it would impose sanctions on transporters, particularly operators of land transport firms who increase their fares, especially during festive seasons.
Minister of State for Transportation, Gbemisola Saraki, said unreasonable transports increase was causing untold hardship on travellers and affecting the Nigerian economy negatively.
She spoke at a meeting that had transporters and officials of the Federal Ministry of Transportation in attendance, which was summoned by the House of Representatives.
Saraki said the lawmakers summoned the meeting due to arbitrary increases in transport fares during festive periods, particularly for land transport.
According to her, the lawmakers were further concerned that Nigerians were already viewing the situation as gross exhibition of greed and monumental corruption on the part of transporters who capitalise on rushing periods to exploit people.
“This invariably puts a question mark on the country’s drive or fight against corruption,” Saraki, who was represented by the Director, Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, FMT, Udu-Ejembi Mary, stated.
She added, “The mandate of the Federal Ministry of Transportation is not only to manage rail, road, inland waterways, sea and air transport nationwide but also to regulate the operators.”
This, according to the minister, was why stakeholders must put measures in place to monitor the activities of transporters across the country, especially during festive periods.
“This is in order to curtail the obnoxious hikes in fares and also impose sanctions on erring operators to serve as a deterrent to others,” she stated.
Transport operators at the meeting, however, argued that several factors often caused fare hikes, particularly during festive seasons.
The Deputy National Secretary-General, Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, Henry Ugwu, outlined some of the factors to include excessive taxation on roads, high cost of petrol, among others.
He said, “From RTEAN, we’ve not directed our people to increase transport fares. Every festive period you have this rush, but it is not basically because of the rush.
“It is, for instance, if you have a fleet of 50 vehicles; when you move passengers from the area of the rush to their destination, you will not see people to bring back. So that is one of the reasons.
“Also, as transporters, we’ve been clamouring for the establishment of a transport bank where we can get low-interest rates and we urge the Federal Government to look into this; it will help the sector.”
Ugwu added, “Another thing is that we are suffering from triple taxation on our highways. States, local governments and their agencies and even vigilantes collect money from us.”
The RTEAN official argued that transporters were not exploiting passengers, stressing the sector was not properly regulated as any vehicle owner could pick passengers from any location without much interference from the authorities.
The Lagos State Government has introduced a technology-driven device, Traffic Management Solution (TMS), aimed at implementing traffic law compliance in the State.
The State Government said the introduction of the handheld device, which allows for real-time capture of pictures and video evidence of road traffic and vehicle compliance violations as they occur, will ease traffic gridlock on Lagos roads and put to rest controversies surrounding the operation of law enforcement agents and traffic violators.
Speaking at a press conference held at Alausa, Ikeja on Wednesday to announce the introduction of the Traffic Management Solution (TMS), Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde said the device, which would be used by both the Lagos Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) in their operations is linked to the control room where every activity will be monitored.
He said with the device, offender may choose to visit a Traffic Court and present the Violation Number for the violation he or she wishes to challenge Electronic verification of the authenticity of drivers’ licenses, vehicle licenses and number plates which will significantly assist in achieving the goal of clamp down on motorists with fake licenses and number plates.
The Commissioner disclosed that Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s goal is to modernise operations and simplify enforcement by eliminating situations that facilitate impediments and cause counterproductive results on roads.
Oladeinde therefore enjoined Lagosians to support the initiatives of the Sanwo-Olu administration in addressing the issue of Traffic Management and Transportation, which is the first pillar of the THEMES developmental agenda of the incumbent government.
He said: “In line with the Smart City status of the state, this innovation will align with traffic management structure on traffic law violations and compliance checks.
“With the use of this TMS device the need for traffic law enforcement officials to have any contact whatsoever with vehicular offenders on the road will be reduced significantly as they will only face the duty of capturing violations which will enable efficient and effective traffic management as their primary duty.
“Lagosians will experience transparency at its peak with the use of the TMS. It will expose in detail violations with the provision of video and picture evidence to aid the resolution process and give specific financial penalties within the ambit of the Law.
“Reports of physical abuse of our traffic management personnel will be eliminated as there will be no need for face to face resolutions and will create a strong deterrence to traffic offences which will significantly reduce the traffic situation in the state.
“I enjoin the good people of Lagos State to support the initiatives of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu led Administration as this is pointer to a better transportation sector as promised at the beginning of this journey in the Y2019,”
Dr. Oladeinde, who briefed journalists in company of the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso; the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Mr. Oluwatoyin Fayinka and other head of agencies in the Ministry of Transportation, disclosed that the recently launched body camera for law enforcement operatives would also complement the new device.
